Solved examples of ratio and proportion:
Example1: What is the 4th term in a proportion of 2, 3, 4.

Soln: Let 4th term = X,
By the definition of proportion, 2 : 3 :: 4 : X => 2/3 = 4/X => X = 6 ans.

Example2: If 3, X, 27 are in continued proportion, then find the value of X.

Soln: Since 3, X, 27 are in continued proportion.Then we can write
3 : X :: X : 27 => X^2 = 3 x 27 = 81 => X = 9 ans.

Example3: What is the 3rd term in a proportion of 4 and 12.

Soln: Let 3rd term = X.Then we can write
4 : 12 :: 12 : X => 4/12 = 12/X => 4X = 12 x 12 => X = 144/4 = 36 ans.

Example4: If 15% of X = 20% of Y, then find the ratio of X : Y.

Soln: 15/100 x X = 20/100 x Y => 15X = 20Y => X/ Y = 20/15 => X : Y = 20 : 15 = 4 : 3.

Example5: If 3X = 2K and 5Y = 8K,. then fint the ratio of X : Y.

Soln:Given that 3X = 2K and 5Y = 8K => X = 2K/ 3 and Y = 8K/ 5.
Therefore, X : Y = 2K/3 x 8K/5 = 5/12 = 5: 12.

Example6: Divide Rs. 3200 among P, Q, R in the ratio 5 : 2 : 9. Find the amount recived by P.

Soln: Amount recived by P = (ratio of P/Sum of ratio) x total amount.
= 5/ 5+2+9 x 3200
= 5/16 x 3200
= 5 x 200
= 1000 ans.
